A long-overlooked property in St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation Department’s portfolio is drawing large crowds thanks to an amenity unique to the region.
Agency director Jaymes MacDonald said a remote-control car track has been developed at the Margaret Olney Feek Recreation Area in Leonidas Township. The attraction opened earlier this month and in its first few weeks alone drew dozens of RC enthusiasts.
The property, which includes about 1,500 feet of Nottawa Creek frontage, was donated by Feek more than 20 years ago. Since then, it has been used primarily by Mendon Community Schools for its cross-country races.
MacDonald, however, said when the idea of a remote-control-car course was pitched to him last year, he knew immediately the 40-acre Feek property would be the perfect location.
MacDonald said he underestimated the number of RC enthusiasts and has no regrets about developing the oval-shaped, dirt track.
He said anyone wishing to operate their remote-controlled vehicle can simply show up and get started; there’s no need to make a reservation or sign up to use the track.
MacDonald added that room has been left for future track expansion.
