Sheryl Virgil, age 65, of Mottville Township, Michigan, passed away on May 31, 2026, at Three Rivers Health, following a courageous two-year illness with cancer.
Sheryl was born in Elkhart to Mervin Roy and Mary Ellen (Chupp) Christner of Sturgis. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mike Virgil, in 2014, as well as her parents.
She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Shirlisa (Steve) Harris of Friendsville, Tennessee; her nieces and nephews, Shireena (AJ), Steven, Scott, and Shelby; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Mark Virgil, Joe (Christina) Virgil, Dennis Virgil, Tim Virgil, and Maureen (Jon) Wojciechowski; and niece and nephew, Sarah and David. She also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends.
Sheryl dedicated much of her life to serving others through her work in the healthcare field. She worked for many years at Sturgis Hospital as a medical records clerk and medical transcriptionist, and later served as a receptionist and transcriptionist for Dr. Mariano Orca in Sturgis. In the last decade of her life, she found deep fulfillment as a staff member at Adult & Teen Challenge in Elkhart. There, she viewed her role not simply as a job, but as a ministry—helping those in need, both physically and spiritually.
A gifted pianist, Sheryl began taking lessons in the first grade and continued playing throughout her life, sharing her talent in churches for nearly six decades. She recorded two piano projects, with a heartfelt desire to use the proceeds to support missions and help others.
Sheryl had a special love for animals, especially her kitten, Schatzi. She also enjoyed traveling, whether for a single day or several weeks, often seeking out destinations near water where she could find peace and rest.
She was a devoted member of The Garage Fellowship in Centerville, and treasured every opportunity to gather there in worship and fellowship.
Sheryl leaves behind many grateful hearts touched by her kindness, encouragement, and unwavering faith. She will be deeply missed.
