Vicksburg Village Manager Jim Mallery is continuing to push for a resolution to satisfy what he says is a six-figure amount the community is owed by Schoolcraft Township.
The issue centers on Schoolcraft Township’s former contracted assessor, Nathan Brousseau. Mallery said Brousseau, over at least a five-year period, neglected to include commercial and residential properties on tax rolls once those parcels were improved.
Most of Vicksburg falls within Schoolcraft Township, where more than three dozen residential properties and 10 commercial properties were improved since 2020 but remained erroneously taxed as vacant land. In general, the taxable value of a property increases when improvements, such as development of a house or business, occur.
Mallery said that oversight translates into five years’ worth of tax dollars the village – and other tax-dependent entities – did not receive. Mallery said the village receives about 30% of its property-tax revenue from its residential taxes.
He estimates the village hopes to recoup more than $220,000 from Schoolcraft Township.
