Martin Bordner, 85

Martin Alan Bordner, born on May 24, 1941 in Sturgis, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2026 in East Lansing at the age of 85, leaving a legacy of academic excellence, devotion to family, and community involvement.

Martin’s educational journey began at Colon High School, where he graduated with the class of 1959. His passion for the sciences led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University, followed by a Master of Science from Michigan State University. Armed with dedication and a thirst for knowledge, Martin established a distinguished academic career as a Paleobotany Professor at Michigan State University. He inspired countless students over his many years of teaching, retiring in 2011. His professional accomplishments and dedication to education were well-respected within the academic community.

Martin’s life was also guided by love and commitment to his family. On July 8, 1967, he married Janet Marie Decker at the Sturgis United Methodist Church, beginning a partnership filled with compassion and mutual support. He is survived by his wife Janet Bordner, and their children: Brandon (Laura Ann Barron) Bordner, Sabrina Woodruff, and Bradley (Stacy) Bordner. His family also includes brother Greg (Deb) Bordner, and sisters-in-law Marsha Decker, and Judy (Tom) Fisher. Martin’s legacy flourishes through his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who carry forth his spirit and values. He was preceded in death by his father, Recil Bordner, and his mother, Donna Bordner.

Beyond the classroom, Martin was a cherished figure in his community. He was a staunch supporter of MSU sports and maintained deep ties to the university even after retirement. Martin tutored neighborhood children, generously sharing his expertise to nurture the next generation. His interests extended to the world of magic, where he took great delight in the annual Abbotts Magic Get Togethers, and relished his time working at Abbotts Magic. Known for his love of playing cards and the enjoyment of a good cigar, Martin approached life’s pleasures with enthusiasm and appreciation for camaraderie.

A graveside service to celebrate Martin’s life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeside Cemetery, located at 57368 North Farrand Road, Colon.

Martin Alan Bordner will be fondly remembered for his commitment to education, his unwavering support for family and community, and the joy he brought to those around him. His impact endures through those who had the privilege to know and learn from him.
