CWD detected in some Michigan deer

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has confirmed more cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in three counties in Michigan. The disease is found in white tailed deer.

Confirmed cases include a two-and-a-half-year-old deer in Calhoun County, a four-year-old deer in Kent County and a three-year-old deer up in Mackinac County.

CWD is a progressive, fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk and moose. The MDARD said an infected animal may appear healthy for months or years before displaying abnormal behavior, weight loss and physical debilitations.

There are currently no reported cases of CWD in humans. The disease has been found during the past few years in many Michigan counties.
