Sheriff’s department warns of fake warrant scam

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is warning people about an ongoing scam involving fake warrants. The sheriff’s office said the scam is targeting Chime cards and other prepaid gift cards.

Scammers may call claiming you have outstanding warrants or possibly missed jury duty or owe money to the courts. They may even have your name and information, plus information of an actual law enforcement office to make the phone call sound more legitimate.

They even may threaten arrest.

The sheriff’s department is asking the community to stay vigilant. Law enforcement WILL NOT call you and demand payment over the phone. If you receive a call like this, DO NOT send money or provide card numbers, PINs or personal information.

Hang up and do not call the number provided by the scammers.

If you are concerned about a potential warrant, contact the courts or law enforcement directly using an official number.

Remember, scammers rely on fear and urgency to get you to act before you have time to verify information.

If someone is demanding money to clear a warrant over the phone, it is a scam.
