Constantine Police Chief Dan Thayer released a statement on widespread speculation and a misunderstanding regarding a device.
Thayer said the device is suspected by many individuals to be a Flock camera, which is installed with the new traffic lights on S. Washington and Sixth streets. This is not a Flock camera.
Thayer said the village was not involved in the project as Washington Street is still a state roadway, maintained by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The “camera” individuals are seeing is a looking device used for traffic control, according to MDOT. This high-tech motion detector is used for approaching traffic to activate the timer to change the light to green as it maximizes efficient traffic flow.
The old, aged trigger in the ground is at all four sides of the intersection, but it is not as easy or cost effective to maintain and repair, officials said.
The new light does not automatically cycle, Thayer added. With no traffic on Sixth Street, people will notice the light stays green on S. Washington Street until approaching motion is detected on Sixth Street to activate the timer to change the light green.
