The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police remain committed to finding Brittany Shank.
Shank, a mother of four from Sturgis, has been missing for nearly eight years.
Both sheriff’s deputies from St. Joseph County and FBI agents from the Detroit field office were on scene of a field in Leonidas Township Tuesday. Authorities said information pertaining to the investigation led them to the field.
Officials said an underground structure was located at the site. They believe there is evidence there which could link to Shank’s disappearance. Measures were taken to get into the structure, including using an excavator to dig up the ground.
Shank was 23 years old when she went missing on November 30, 2018. She was reportedly last seen in the area of Fawn River Road near Workman Road in Fawn River Township.
That night, Shank and an unidentified man had been traveling together, according to reports, when they were involved in a car crash. Shank then went to a nearby home asking for help, but the homeowner allegedly had trouble determining what she needed help with, according to reports.
After the homeowner called police, Shank left and was gone when authorities arrived. The vehicle remained at the crash site.
While there is new activity surrounding this incident, authorities caution the activity in Leonidas Township should not be interpreted as confirmation anything was located. Authorities are simply following up information received.
Anyone with information on Shank’s disappearance is asked to contact Central Dispatch at (269) 467-9045.
