The City of Portage has hired its next city manager.
On Tuesday, the city council officially appointed Karen Dempsey-Horan as the new leader for the city. She brings nearly 30 years of experience in local government. She will begin her new role in a few months. Those years of experience include community development, strategic planning, organizational leadership and municipal administration.
Dempsey-Horan was chosen as the candidate for city manager on August 28 out of three finalists, including Aaron Desentz, Mt. Pleasant City Manager, and Sarah Moyer-Cale, the city manager of Hastings. Her first scheduled day on the job will be November 2.
Dempsey-Horan is currently the chief administrative officer for The Woodlands Township in Texas. She will succeed Pat McGinnis, who retired as the city manager of Portage July 3 after holding the position since 2023.
