St. Joseph County jail adds new initiative for inmates

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department is looking to help give back to inmates.

On Wednesday, it was announced IGNITE (Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education) would be joining St. Joseph County’s jail. IGNITE was started by Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. With the addition of St. Joseph County, IGNITE is currently in four Michigan county jails and 45 nationwide.

The program gives participating inmates a chance to work on their education, job skills and other areas like personal responsibility. It’s a merit-based program where participants are required to put forth the effort and take responsibility for their actions, the sheriff’s office said.

The office is working with both Glen Oaks Community College and Michigan Works! to help provide education and employment resources for opportunities to those who will participate.
