Upgrades planned for St. Joseph County parks

St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation has an ambitious agenda related to park improvements in 2024.

Much of the agency’s attention will center on Plumb Lake County Park, in Burr Oak Township.

Parks and Rec director Jaymes MacDonald said the priority for now is keeping up with day-to-day obligations. In the fall, however, he promises there will be a fair amount of activity at the 126-acre park.

The biggest job, he said, will be the addition of a mountain-bike trail at Plumb Lake. The all-new trail will be independent from the hiking trail, cover about five miles and should be rideable by late fall.

Meanwhile, another ready-to-go project is development of a new restroom facility at Rawson’s King Mill County Park in Leonidas Township.

At Kettles Park, the county’s newest park that was added in 2021, MacDonald said plans call for adding more boardwalk and creating better access to the St. Joseph River.

The 60-acre Kettles Park is in the southeast corner of Fabius Township, on the east side of U.S. 131.
