Out and About for September 23rd, 2008

The St. Joseph County Grange Fair is now in the history books. Weather was perfect, except for opening day. If anyone reading this had anything to do with making the fair happen, I applaud you for a job well done. Centreville may now return to the quiet village that we’ve all come to love and appreciate.

Getting Out and About is what I do as often as possible. Hence this weekly column. Getting Out and About can be a lot of fun; yet depending on where we go, it can, at times, be dangerous. Three Rivers has a fascinating downtown with many fine shops, and normally, you can casually stroll both sides of the street, checking out the storefronts. Unfortunately, some uncaring bicyclists and skateboarders aren’t aware of the fact that skateboarding and bike riding on downtown sidewalks violate a city ordinance. This is where the “danger factor” comes into effect. Pedestrians, please be careful as you take in the sights of historic downtown Three Rivers. A few couldn’t care less about your safety and comfort. They arm themselves with bicycles and skateboards. Please don’t confront these individuals, because they have no respect for you, and they’ll pretty much tell you what you can do with your opinion. I’ll now put away the soapbox one more time.

The Grooveside will perform this Saturday, September 27, at the Spirit Rhythms Coffee House. Located at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Buckhorn Road north of Three Rivers, this venue has become the place to go for top-notch entertainment. The Grooveside will play two one-hour sets from 7 to 8 and from 8:30 to 9:30 P.M. In between the sets, local artist Larry-Michael Hackenberg will host “coffee talk”. Larry-Michael currently has some of his work on display at the Journey Works gallery, also located at St. John’s.

The Grooveside will provide music that smooth jazz fans truly appreciate. They currently perform weekly at the Sopranos Restaurant in Chicago and are known for their style of jazz in South Bend, Fort Wayne, and other Indiana cities.

The Spirit Rhythms Coffee House has monthly concerts with free admission, and you may partake of a selection of gourmet desserts prepared by pastry chef Amber Mathews, plus enjoy fairly traded coffee and tea, which are served throughout the evening. As I mentioned, admission is free, but donations are always welcomed, and refreshments are available for purchase. The Spirit Rhythms Coffee House is just the place to go for a perfect night out.

If you enjoy Oktoberfest and the music of a good old German band, you’ll want to plan to join the Three Rivers German Band as they hold their ninth annual Oktoberfest concert this Saturday, September 27. The concert is free and will take place at the Three Rivers High School Performing Arts Center at 7:30 P.M. This year’s theme is Alpine Echoes of Austria and will, of course, include a couple of selections from The Sound of Music. If you’ve always wanted to play in a German band, or if you have any questions, please contact Marlen Hetmansperger at 279-7108. You’re never too old to have fun playing in a German band.

Over the next week, give this some thought: Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.

See you Out and About.
