I was amazed at how many readers thanked me for mentioning the fact that the downtown sidewalks can be a danger zone because of the bicyclists and skateboarders who insist on using the sidewalks as their private “straightaway”. Perhaps one of our city commissioners will bring up this issue at the next City Commission meeting. I’m sure it would be mentioned if one of them happened to be knocked down by one of our younger citizens. Anyway, I thank you all for your comments. They are very much appreciated.
The Three Rivers High School Band Boosters will host a carwash this Saturday, October 4, from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. at the Three Rivers Fire Department parking lot. This is America, and you have many options. You can spend two hours and wash your car in your driveway. This would mean that you’re using your own water, and your time has to be worth something. Another option would be to take it to one of the many car washes located in the Three Rivers area. Your car would be clean and your wallet would be a little lighter. The option I recommend is to let the band members wash your car for you. The cost would be your donation, which I’m sure would be quite generous. The feeling you’d receive, knowing that you’ve helped this great group of students earn money for their spring trip to Florida, would be priceless. I know that I always feel good about watching the younger set work and have fun at the same time. Let’s support the high school band so that they can travel to Florida. They are true ambassadors!
The St. Joseph County Transportation Authority reminds you that everyone is eligible to ride to any location in St. Joe County. No, you don’t need to be a senior citizen. No, you don’t need to be physically or mentally challenged. The only thing you need in order to be eligible to ride one of their buses or vans is the need to get to your destination. Leave your vehicle in the garage and call the CTA at 273-7808. You’ll be surprised at how inexpensive it is to let them do the driving. With winter just around the corner, you might want to look to the CTA for all of your transportation needs. It’s a great way to get Out and About.
The Commission on Aging can make your life a little easier if you’ve had or are planning to have surgery. Through your hospital discharge planner, the COA can provide meal, homemaking and escort services for the first six weeks of your recovery. They’d love to work with you, your family and your health care provider while you return to good health. The COA’s team can make your time at home easier. Friends are great to have. Without them, life could be quite lonely. One of my friends keeps me supplied with bits of trivia and other things that make a lot of sense. The English language is very difficult to learn because of certain words. Here are several examples:
1. The bandage was wound around the wound.
2. The farm was used to produce produce.
3. The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4. We must polish the Polish furniture.
5. The soldier decided to desert in the desert.
I feel very fortunate to live here in America. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to learn our language as a new citizen or visitor.
