Out and About for October 21st, 2008

You can tell that fall has definitely arrived, and hopefully, will be here for more than just a couple of weeks. Last weekend was the color tour, and I’m pretty sure the colors are at their peak. At least the ones in our yard and driveway. I’ve found that, if you want the wind to pick up, all you have to do is start raking the lawn.

Another sign of fall is the annual fall vocal music concert at the Three Rivers High School Performing Arts Center. This FREE concert begins at 7 this evening, October 21, with the doors opening around 6:30. If you want to restore your faith in our young adults, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. All the students have worked very hard to put this evening’s concert together. Your applause is their only reward.

The jazz band Evidence will return to the Spirit Rhythms Coffee House this Saturday evening, October 25, at 7. Spirit Rhythms is still located at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Buckhorn Road, just north of Three Rivers. Evidence has been a bop haven for some of the state’s best jazz players for almost ten years. The band has performed with guitarist Mark Elf and Delmark Records’ vibraphonist Jim Cooper and has also performed at the annual Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Jazz Festival, the Lansing Old Town Jazz Festival and the Grand Rapids Jazz and Blues Festival. The list of credits goes on. Don’t let this opportunity to witness live jazz for FREE pass you by. The evening would not be complete unless you sampled some of the tasty desserts prepared by pastry chef Amber Matthews. The only real way to compliment the vast array of desserts is to enjoy some fair traded coffee and tea. The refreshments may be purchased, but the concert is always FREE. Donations, of course, are always graciously accepted.

Tomorrow evening, October 22, would be a perfect time to enjoy a spaghetti supper. Trinity Episcopal Church, 321 North Main Street in Three Rivers would like to make this desire a reality. Supper includes spaghetti, salad and a beverage for $5.50 for adults and children 12 and under $2.00. If you’re blessed with several children, the meals are priced at three for $5.

The Three Rivers Lions Club thanks those of you who purchased roses for last Saturday’s Sweetest Day. The money returned to the club from the sale of roses will be used to finance projects that benefit the local community.

Last week, I once again displayed my ignorance by saying that Sweetest Day was one of those special days created by Hallmark. WRONG! Sweetest Day originated in Cleveland back in 1922. It seems that Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee, wanted to bring a little happiness into the lives of orphans, shut-ins and others who were forgotten. He worked with some of his friends and began to distribute candy and small gifts to the underprivileged. On the first Sweetest Day, movie star Ann Pennington presented 2200 Cleveland newspaper boys with boxes of candy. She wanted to express her gratitude for their service to the public. Ohio is the top state for Sweetest Day sales, followed by Michigan and Illinois. Texas, California and Florida are among the top ten states in sales. Over the years, Sweetest Day has evolved into a time to express romantic love and also to show appreciation to friends. Sweetest Day is always observed the third Saturday in the month of October. Mark that on your calendars. A special “Thank You” to the reader who provided this very interesting information.

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

See you Out and About!
