There’s a saying that’s quite well known. “It’s either feast or famine”. I’m in my third year of putting together this weekly column. There are times when I must really dig to come up with things to include in “Out and About”, and then there are times when I wish I could use more space than is normally available. This is one of those times when you won’t find a paragraph filled with trivia items.
This Friday, October 10, is Homecoming for Three Rivers. That means there will be a parade and special events at the Homecoming football game at Armstrong Field.
As in the past, the women of the First United Methodist Church, Three Rivers, will hold their famous chili supper at 215 N. Main Street from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M. The church is located along the parade route, which provides a perfect opportunity to watch the parade, partake of some great homemade chili, and then head out to watch the Wildcats win. The cost for this tasty meal is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under 12. What a great idea! Watch a parade, enjoy some chili and root for the home team.
If Homecoming is not your cup of tea, you might consider spending an evening at the theatre. ESCANABA IN DA MOONLIGHT opens this Friday, October 10, at the Three Rivers Community Players’ Theatre, located directly behind Dairy Queen on Millard Road in Three Rivers. This hilarious comedy will leave you in stitches or rolling in the aisles with laughter. Performances run October 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19. Friday and Saturday curtain times are 8 P.M., and the Sunday matinees start promptly at 2 P.M. You may purchase tickets at Beam Sound and Video on West Michigan Avenue in Three Rivers or at the door. Prices are $10 for adults and $9 for students and senior citizens. As usual, advance ticket purchase would be wise, due to limited seating.
As if this coming weekend isn’t busy enough, Gray’s Community Band, under the direction of Andrew Hagenbuch, will present a concert entitled “Help, I’ve Fallen Into Music” on Sunday, October 12, at 3 P.M., at the First Church of God, at 17398 M-86, just east of the American Legion in Three Rivers. Music selections include “The Irish Washerwoman”, “Poet and Peasant Overture”, and a few selections from “South Pacific”. As an extra treat, Andrew Hagenbuch will perform a special tuba solo. If you’re familiar with Gray’s Community Band, you know that this performance is FREE and that refreshments will be served after the concert. Donations are always accepted, and the band always welcomes new members who enjoy having fun making music. I’ll give you more information next week, but you definitely want to make plans for Sunday, October 19. It’s autumn and the leaves are beginning to change color, which means it’s time for the annual Fall Color Tour here in Three Rivers. In the meantime, should you happen to see a local business owner, a member of the St. Joseph County Parks Commission, or someone with the Three Rivers Area chamber of Commerce, let them know how much you appreciate their making this annual event possible.
