Brazil LaVern Petoskey, Jr., 71

Brazil LaVern Petoskey, Jr., age 71, of Mendon, died late Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

He was born on July 30, 1937, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., one of 13 children born to Brazil L. and Della M. (Ludwig) Petoskey.

Following graduation from Shepherd High School, Brazil went to work for the Michigan Department of Transportation, where he worked for the next 30 years. He first worked in maintenance, later as foreman, and retired as district Superintendent of Highways for the State of Michigan in 1994. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf.

Brazil was married to Barbara Jean Sallows on Aug. 20, 1961, in Battle Creek. She survives along with two children and their spouses, Brian and Regina Petoskey, and Dawn and Jody Gest both of Centreville; four grandchildren, Nathan and Eric Petoskey and Jordan and Kayla Gest; two sisters, Della Petoskey of Mt. Pleasant and Betty Hoffman of Freemont, Ohio; several nieces and nephews including Sharon Wilkins and Rosie Evvinghaus. Brazil was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and for one hour prior to services which are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Rev. Clint Zehr, Pastor of the New Covenant Christian Fellowship Church of Colon will officiate. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Sturgis Home Health Care.
