James L. Adams, Jr., age 76, of Centreville, MI passed away Monday, September 14th, 2009 at his home. He was born in Kalamazoo on July 20, 1933, a son of James L. and Thelma (Huber) Adams Sr. Jim graduated from Centreville High School in 1952 and attended Michigan State University. On May 2, 1953 he married Marilyn Stumpf in Three Rivers. Jim served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 as a tank commander for 14 months during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Three Rivers. Jim owned and operated Adams Excavating in Centreville for 30 years, retiring in 1999. He continued to work in the business with his son Scott following retirement. Jim was a member of the Centreville Volunteer Fire Department for nearly 30 years and served as a Village trustee from 1966 to 1977 and from 1978 until 1986 he acted as Village President on the council. Jim loved the outdoors especially hunting, fishing, camping and working in his yard and garden.
Surviving are his wife Marilyn Adams, Centreville, daughters Becky Kurtzman, Battle Creek, Lisa (John) Youga, Centreville, sons Scott (Patti) Adams, Centreville, Mark (Gaylene) Adams, Three Rivers, brother Jerry (Rosemary) Adams, Centreville, grandchildren Alecia (Todd) Flynn, James Kurtzman, Carrisa Adams, Sam Adams, Amy Adams, Adam Johnson, Michael Youga and Lyndsey Youga, great granddaughter Gracie Flynn, 4 step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Thelma (Huber) Adams Sr., aunts and uncles.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Graveside Services will be held at the Prairie River Cemetery, Centreville, at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 19th, with Pastor Clint Zehr, New Covenant Christian Fellowship, Burr Oak, officiating.
