Bernadine E. Strange, age 89, of Sturgis, passed away Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at her home.
She was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Mansfield, Ohio, a daughter of the late Harry and Helen (Mockelan) Barr.
Bernadine grew up in Mansfield, and later moved with her family to the Colon and Sturgis area and then to Delton, where she owned and operated an adult foster care home for veterans for more than 25 years. She then moved to Flagler Beach, Fla., for 10 years and back to Sturgis in 2004.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis, and enjoyed activities at the apartments where she lived, playing bingo, dancing, and traveling. She also enjoyed ceramics and her special cat, Oreo.
Surviving are three daughters, Amanda Teadt of Sturgis, Phyllis (Jim) Daenzer of Owosso, and Doris (Roy) Gundrum of Jackson; nine grandchildren, Robert Teadt Jr., Sandy Baker, Debbie Brinklow, Roy Gundrum II, Mike Gundrum, Roxanne Goss, Andrea Kidd, Ryan Daenzer, and Carmen Herald; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dellmae Leister; twin, Kathleen Ewers; and three infant siblings.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Bernadine E. Strange will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sturgis, with the Rev. Calvin J. Kolzow and Michael Klafehn officiating.
Graveside services and interment will follow in Prairie River Cemetery in Centreville. Memorial donations may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
