I’m not an athlete. I’m more of a sports spectator. After all, I am a guy, so I must enjoy at least one or two sports. Anyway, I’ve become a fan of minor league teams, namely the Kalamazoo Kings baseball team and the Kalamazoo K-Wings hockey team. The reason I mention this is that the Kalamazoo K-Wings opened their season last Thursday, so from now until next April, I’ll do my best to take in a few games at their arena in Kalamazoo or listen to them on WLKM-FM, 98.5. Mike Madugno does an excellent job of bringing us the play-by-action, and he’s turned me into a fan. I will make an honest effort to travel to Kalamazoo and see more games this year. It’s not that expensive and is a great way to get Out and About with the entire family. The K-Wings’ home opener is this Saturday, October 24. If you can’t get out to a game or if you’re unable to listen in on the radio, check the Three Rivers Commercial-News. My friend Mark McGlothlen does an excellent job of keeping everyone current on the facts and figures of the K-Wings. He’s forgotten more than I’ll ever know when it comes to hockey. Oh yes, Mark also writes a column entitled “Mark My Words”, a refreshing look at life through his eyes. It appears nearly every Saturday in this paper.
If you’re familiar with this column, you know that I really like things that are free, but then who doesn’t? I try to do my best and keep readers aware of events that are coming up that are either FREE or inexpensive. The Spirit Rhythms Coffee House is a perfect example. The coffee house is usually open the last Saturday of the month and provides a perfect opportunity to get Out and About. Admission is FREE, and the refreshments are well worth the few dollars. This month they will do something a little different. On Sunday, October 25, Spirit Rhythms will offer a dinner-style chili bar from noon until 2 P.M. The concert will begin at 2 P.M. and will feature both the 338th Army Band and Evidence Jazz Group. Meal tickets for the chili bar are available for $10 per person, and children under 5 are FREE. You may purchase meal tickets in advance by calling St. John’s Lutheran Church at (269)278-7245. As always, gourmet desserts and fair trade coffee will be available for purchase during the concert. Mark Kinney will once again provide the desserts.
Spirit Rhythms Coffee House is located inside St. John’s Lutheran Church on Buckhorn Road, just north of Three Rivers.
Tuesday, October 27, is the Fall Vocal Music Concert at the Three Rivers High School Performing Arts Center. I’ve found it amazing to listen to these students and see how much they improve as they progress through their student years. The concert begins at 7 P.M., and the doors will open at 6:30. Oh yes, this concert is also FREE.
Congratulations to the Three Rivers Community Players. It seems that A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody was quite successful, a great way to open your 2009-2010 theatrical season. Your new sign on the east side of your theatre looks great and has been a long time coming. May you continue to “WOW” the audiences with top-rate productions at a very affordable price.
Here’s another thing I’ve given more than a few moments to ponder. If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?
See you Out and About!
