Dale Beard Bishop, age 85 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away early
Tuesday morning March 30, 2010 at his home.
He was born May 22, 1924 in Auburn, Indiana a son to the late Ronald and
Frances (Beard) Bishop.
Dale had resided in Sturgis since 1961 coming from Fort Wayne, Indiana
where he graduated from Central High School and he continued his
education at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. On May 22, 1946
he married Bette J. Onofrio in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
For 25 years he owned and operated the Sturgis Western Auto Store and
Bishop Furniture Store also in Sturgis. Prior to coming to Sturgis Dale
had been employed by Standard Oil of Indiana. For 23 years he had served
on the Board of Directors of Citizens State Bank, renamed Bank One and
following the purchase of the bank by Citizens Bank of Flint it was and
currently is named Citizens Bank.
Dale was proud to have served his country from 1942-1946 during WWII
with the U.S. Marine Corp earning the rank of Sergeant.
He was a member of the Sturgis Evangelical Church. He was also a member
of Meridian Sun-Eagle Lodge #49 F& AM, Lakeville, Indiana Lodge #353
F&AM, Sturgis Shrine Club, Scottish Rite-Valley of Grand Rapids,
Saladine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Grand Rapids, Royal Order of Jesters,
Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion and the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Bette “Betsy” Bishop, One
Son; Neal (Tammie)Bishop of San Francisco, California, Grandson; Jason
E. (Cindi) DeVine of St. Louis, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter; Marcia Jane
Tague, two brothers and one step-brother..
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial
service celebrating the life of Dale Bishop and a time for fellowship
and sharing of memories will be held at a later date to be announced.
Private burial of the ashes will take place at Roselawn Cemetery in
Union Township near Auburn, Indiana where military honors will be
conferred by the U.S. Marine Corp Honor Guard.
