Charlie Schmitz, 75

Charles “Charlie” Schmitz, age 75 of Mendon, died Monday July 5, 2010 at the Bronson Hospital Emergency Room.  He was born in Chicago, IL on July 27, 1934 the son of Paul A. and Norvella (Kropel) Schmitz.  He attended St. Martin’s Catholic School and graduated from St. Rita’s Catholic School in 1953.   Charlie served in the U.S. Army from 1957-59 and was stationed in Italy.  While living in Chicago, Charlie had worked for Pepsi Cola Bottlers for 15 years, and later for Blue Island Cab Company and McVittie Plating Company.  While living in Mendon he had been employed by Lear Plastics where he was an active member of UAW Local 503, serving as Union Steward and Sergeant at Arms of the Area 6 Council. He and his family also served as hosts for several area foreign exchange students.  He was also a chauffer for the Amish community. 

Charlie was married to Nan Custard on June 11, 1977 in Mendon.  She survives along with a daughter, Theresa Schmitz of Three Rivers; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Urick;  a brother, Lawrence Schmitz of Kentucky; several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and by 5 brothers, Paul, Michael, Thomas, Robert, and Edward Schmitz. 

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon, and where the Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.  The funeral mass for Charlie Schmitz will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday July 9, 2010 at Saint Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. Father James Vinh Le officiating.  Burial will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.  Memorials may be directed to either the Salvation Army, or St. Edward Catholic Church, or the Mendon United Methodist Church.
