Conrad Alan Freeland, 78, of Howe, Ind., passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
He was born Nov. 2, 1931, in Sturgis, a son of the late Glenn and Dorothy (Kent) Freeland.
Alan had resided his whole life in the Sturgis and Howe area and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1949. While a student at Sturgis High School, he played football and was a member of the band. He continued his education at the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the marching band. Alan had also attended the University of Wisconsin.
On Sept. 3, 1950, he married Betty June Wright at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis.
He retired following 28 years of dedicated employment with Citizens State Bank in Sturgis, where he held the positions of vice president, cashier, trust officer and secretary to the board of directors.
For many years, Alan was an active member of the community. Some of his involvements included Life Member of B.P.O. Elks #1381, past member of the Sturgis Exchange Club and had served on the board of directors for Sturgis Hospital and Arch Workshop.
He was a devoted husband and father, as well as a beloved friend to many. He loved to play golf, work crosswords, travel and play cards.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty June; a daughter, Cynthia Freeland of Houston; a son, David (Cheri) Freeland of Sturgis; a brother, Kent (Lucille) Freeland of Croswell; a sister, Jill (David) Mieras of Ann Arbor; two nephews, Mark Mieras and Dale Mieras; two grandnieces, Rachel (Eric) Potes and Jena Mieras; and two stepbrothers, Joseph (Madeleine) Parker of Sturgis and James (Sharon) Parker of Howe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Jeannine; and infant brother, Jan Freeland.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis, where a memorial service celebrating the life of Conrad Alan Freeland will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Deb Johnson of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis will officiate.
