Wendell E. Allen, age 72, of Leonidas, passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, at his home, after several months of failing health.
Wendell was born July 24, 1938, in Leonidas Township, a son of the late Vern L. and Amelia (Diekman) Allen.
On April 22, 1960, he married Carolyn Mae Lunger in Centreville.
Wendell had lived most of his life in the Leonidas and Colon area, and had attended Colon schools.
He had worked 48 years as a truck driver for Dayco Corp. and Republic Roller Corp., both in Three Rivers. He was also a part-time farmer and believed every farm should have animals.
Wendell loved driving truck for a living and enjoyed farming and helping his grandchildren with their 4-H animals for the county fair.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Allen of Leonidas; a daughter, Wendy (Brian) Thompson of Colon; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Allen of Montevallo, Ala.; four grandchildren, Jessica Albright and Tyler Pierson, both of Colon, and Kelsey and Sarah Allen, both of Montevallo; a stepgrandson, Carl Thompson of Athens; a sister, Joyce (Carl) Lucas of Colon; a brother, Raymond L. (Beverly) Allen of Bronson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death be a son, Randy Eugene Allen; and two brothers David L. and Roger W. Allen.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Wendell E. Allen will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Colon.
If desired, the family suggests memorials be made in memory of Wendell to either Leonidas Fire and Rescue or Borgess-Visiting Nurse and Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
