Edward Oakes, 72

Edward E. Oakes, Age 72, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital.

He was born Nov. 8, 1937, in Elkhart, Ind., a son to Samuel and Ruth Jane (Cripe) Oakes.

Edward was a veteran of the U.S. Army and has been a resident of Sturgis since 1973 previously living in Elkhart, Ind. On Jan. 15, 1972, in Edwardsburg, he married Carol Kime.

He had been employed for Babcock and Wilcox in Elkhart, Ind., or 20 years, United Paper in Sturgis, Mich., and retired from Grumman Olson in Sturgis in 2000.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Carol; daughter, Shannon (Jerry) Eishen of Tekonsha, Mich.; son, Paul Oakes of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Mandi Pyke, Marissa Eishen, Rachel Marie Louise Eishen, Haylee Kay Oakes, and Kayla Rae Oakes; his mother, Ruth Jane Hoover of Goshen, Ind.; five sisters and brothers, Cynthia Sue (Ray) Good and Patty Lyons both of Elkhart, Ind., Shirley (Charles) Riggs of Goshen, Ind., Carlos (Charlene) Hoover of Warsaw, Ind., and Rex (Linda) Hoover of Sturgis, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his beloved pet yorkie, ShuShu, and special family friends: Mr. and Mrs. Keith Schrader of Three Rivers, Mr. and Mrs. Gerardo Sanchez and mother Thelma Helgren, all of Thompsonville, MI, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Baker and family of Sturgis, Mich., and James Pierce and family of Interlochen, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his father.

According to his wishes there will be no services or visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be directed to the family. Envelopes are available at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091 who is in charge of the arrangements.
