Steven John Smith, 42, of Sturgis, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at his home.
He was born Jan. 10, 1968, in Elkhart, Ind., a son of David and Diane (Dozois) Smith.
Steve had resided in Sturgis for the past four years coming from LaGrange, Ind., where he graduated from Lakeland High School with the class of 1986. He furthered his education at Calvary Chapel Bible College in California where he received an associate degree.
On March 24, 2005, he married Amber Kendall in LaGrange.
For the past eight years, Steve had been employed as an automotive technician at Wal-Mart in Sturgis.
He was a member of the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed wrestling and coaching wrestling. He was proud of the fact that he and Amber built the home they were living in.
He is survived by his loving wife Amber; one daughter, Skyler Smith, at home; one son, Dawson Smith, at home; mother, Diane Smith of LaGrange, Ind.; one brother, David Smith of Cassopolis; grandfather, O.A. Dozois of Napa, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father.
In accordance with family wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene, 70031 S. Lakeview Ave., Sturgis where a memorial service celebrating the life of Steven J. Smith will begin at 11: a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. John Shoup will officiate.
The Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is entrusted with the arrangements.
