Lee G. Schwenk, 85, of Portage, and formerly of Leonidas, passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011.
Lee was born April 6, 1925, in Leonidas, the only son of Jacob and Elva (Krupp) Schwenk.
He graduated from Colon High School in 1943, Western Michigan University in 1949, and took classes at Indiana University.
During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for three years, helping map Korea. Lee worked for Fidelity Federal Savings and Loan for 40 years, starting as a teller and working his way up to executive vice-president, retiring in 1991.
He loved gardening, golfing and traveling and volunteered for the Lions Club, SCORE and 4-H programs.
On Dec. 26, 1948, he married Katherine Joanna Mumby, who survives.
Lee is also survived by their children, Thomas (Jane) Schwenk, Steve Schwenk and Janet (Bill) Chambers; grandchildren, Sarah (Steve), Andrew, Jason (Stacy), Adam (Lindsey), Emily, Erin and Abby; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his three sisters, Gladys, Florence and Evelyn.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave., Portage. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Kevin Hart officiating. Interment will follow in Central Portage Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Second Reformed Church or the Kalamazoo Downtown Lions Club.
