We say goodbye to our dear loved one, Vermadell (Allen) Thomas, age 89, of Leonidas. She left us peacefully and without pain on Saturday, March 5, 2011, to join her beloved husband, Leonard, forever.
She leaves behind her family who love her, children Sheilah (E.D.) Mutschler, Rhonda (John) Smit and Shelley (Polyvios) Touloupas; grandchildren Lance (Nancy) Patnoude, Monica Patnoude, Brian Mutschler, Mariah, Melena and Larissa Touloupas; siblings, Ruth Colvin, Bill Allen and Beatrice (Bob) Standley and their families. She was also blessed with four great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, and son, Keith.
Verma moved to the area from southern Illinois as a young woman and worked in a bomber plant as well as the state hospital. In 1946 she married Leonard Thomas when he returned from the war at his parents’ home in Leonidas. In 1970 after his parents’ deaths they moved to that home where Verma lived until her death. Together they were active members of the Grange, belonged to a square-dancing group and a snowmobile club. She has been a good neighbor to all and for the past year and a half she was cared for by a young Amish couple, David and Norma who lived with her in her home.
She loved her gardens, her family and her home and passed quickly in her own room with no suffering. She will be fondly remembered by many for her odd phrases, her breathtaking gardens, her huge sweet tooth and the color purple.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the Spencer Family Funeral Home in Athens. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday followed by interment at the Leonidas cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Bible Church, Fulton.
