Barbara Jane (Kinney) Shafer, age 47, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 30, 2011, at her residence in Morgantown, IN.
She was born Aug. 23, 1963, in Des Monies, Iowa, to Joseph and Mary Jane (Stephens) Kinney who lovingly survive in Trafalgar. Barbara married her devoted husband of 30 years, Don L. Shafer on Dec. 27, 1980, in Burr Oak. He survives.
She was a 1982 graduate of Sturgis High School in Sturgis. Barbara worked as a youth care manager with the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center for the past 13 years. Prior to that, she worked as an office assistant for 15 years at the Marsh Supermarket in Franklin. Barbara was a former member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Trafalgar.
She was an avid card player and was especially fond of playing Rook. Barbara spent her time enjoying her family and grandchildren and when the weather was warm she could be found outdoors walking and riding bikes around Morgantown.
Barbara was the cherished mother of four sons, Elijah (wife, Amber) Shafer of Avon, Ind., Aaron (wife, Sasha) Shafer of Indianapolis, Matthew (wife, Ashley) Shafer of Indianapolis, and Samuel (wife, Emily) Shafer of Morgantown, and godson, Joshua (wife, Kristen) Van Winkle of Colorado Springs, Colo. She will be missed by her sister, Debbra Kinney of New Whiteland, Ind.; and two brothers, Jerrold Kinney of Indianapolis and Jonathan (wife, Karen) Kinney of Brownsburg, Ind., and special nephew, Joshua Shafer of Three Rivers. Barbara was the loving grandmother to Damion, Kaitlyn, Ethan, Saphira, Tristan and Layne Shafer and John and Mattie Van Winkle. Barbara will be remembered by her in laws Levi and Lucy Hochstetler of Elizabethton, Tenn; father in law Arnold Shafer of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters-in-law Debbie (husband, Reggie) Sermershiem of Edmond, Okla., Teresa (husband, Jeff) Forbes of Portland, Ore., and Diana McNamara of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and brothers-in-law Rick and Dean Shafer, both of Elizabethton, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Jo Kinney; and grandparents, Milton and Marvina Kinney and Guy and Mable Stephens.
The Rev. Darrell Miller will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation and Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from noon until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery Morgantown.
