Carol Matthews, 90

Carol E. Matthews, 90, of Bronson, died May 28, 2011, in a nursing home next door to her son’s home in Chicago.

Services for Carol will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, with Pastor Kurt Kuhlmann officiating. Interment will follow at Burr Oak Cemetery.

Visitation will from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson and from noon until time of services on Thursday at the church.

Carol was born Dec. 11, 1920, in Burr Oak Township to Don and Leona (Eberhard) Perry. On Sept. 22, 1942, she married Robert C. Matthews in Great Lakes, Ill. He preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 2000.

Mrs. Matthews had worked as a nurse’s aide in Paw Paw and then spent 15 years working in medical records for both Community Health Center of Branch County and Sturgis Hospital, from where she eventually retired. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, where she had served in the ladies’ aide, and was involved in many other church functions. She and her husband had enjoyed traveling together through the years and had spent many winters in the Big Bend area of Texas. Carol enjoyed cooking, crafts and reading, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Carol is survived by her son, Stan Matthews, and his life partner Ted Slabey of Chicago; her nieces, Kay (Harry) Delle of Colon, Renee (Ron) Keeslar of Burr Oak, and of Bronson; her nephews, Brian (Betty) Hagen of Bronson and Wayne Perry of Ionia; her sister-in-law, Ruth Perry of Ionia; three grandchildren; and several great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Doris Hagen and Donna Hettinger; and her brother, Keith Perry.
