James Kerschner, 89

James Phillip Kerschner, age 89, of Sturgis, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Sturgis Hospital.

He was born to Harry and Ethel (Beck) Kerchner on Aug. 22, 1921, in Sturgis, Mich.

James graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1939. He then graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1943, where he was the captain of the basketball team for two years. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II and co-managed the Sturgis Lumber and Supply Company with his brother Bob. For several years James was a vocational instructor for the building trades program at Sturgis High School before owning his own contracting business. He enjoyed golfing with the “Crutch Players” golf group and the Monday night “Men’s League” with Keith. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

James is survived by children, Connie (Al) Alsedek, Ron (Deb) Kerchner, Wendy (Steve) Weith, and Keith Kerchner; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and special friend Billie Lou Englehart.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Barbara, Joan and Mary; two sons, Scott Kerchner and Lee Lahmeyer; his parents; brother, Robert Kerchner; and sister Kathleen Schmueller.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, from 4- 8 p.m. at the house of Keith Kerchner’s, 804 N. Nottawa, Sturgis, MI 49091. The memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 15, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1320 S. Lakeview Ave. Sturgis, MI 49091. The Rev. Mike Wicks will officiate.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Thurston Woods Village ( Froh Home), 307 N. Franks Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
