Jerry A. Abbs, age 75, of Sturgis, passed away early Friday morning, Aug. 5, 2011, at Three Rivers Health.
He was born Sept. 12, 1935, in Sturgis, a son of the late Carlisle and Isabel (Burg) Abbs.
Jerry has been a resident of Sturgis all of his life and on April 9, 1955, in Sturgis he married Imadean Rakestraw.
He had been employed for a short time at Harter Corporation and Transogram and retired from the Kirsch Company after 42 years working in the shipping department.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are wife, Imadean; two daughters, Deborah Owsley of LaGrange, Ind., and Patricia Abbs of Sturgis; son, Stephen Abbs of Sturgis; four grandchildren, Jonathon and Sheldon Hewitt and Russell and Amanda Owsley; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack (Sarah) Abbs and Doug (Cathi) Abbs, both of Sturgis; one niece and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Family Funeral Home – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Jerry A. Abbs will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home with The Rev. Sam Maddox, Life and Light Wesleyan Church, officiating.
Graveside Services and interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family suggest memorial donations be directed to Missions at the Life and Light Wesleyan Church, 15765 Hoffman Rd., Three Rivers, MI 49093. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
