Joan Edith Dalman, age 84, of Sturgis, passed away early Friday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2011, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Earnest and Frieda (Holtz) Houck.
Joan was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1944.
On April 28, 1944, she married Floyd Hack in Sturgis. He died May 4, 1974. In 1979, she married William Dalman in Sturgis. He died in 1989.
She retired from Weaver & Lingg Farm Implement in Sturgis following five years of dedicated employment as a secretary. Joan had also made and decorated cakes for many years.
She was an active longtime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis where she taught Sunday school for 36 years and she was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aid.
Joan enjoyed needlework and reading. Her greatest joy in life was time spent with her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Diane (Allen) Gottschalk of Three Rivers and Connie (Dale) Carpenter of Lansing, five grandchildren, Heather (Ray) Swinsick, Joel (Jennifer) Gottschalk, Quenten Carpenter, Cory (Denise Kenyan) Carpenter and Benjamin (Jennifer) Carpenter, eleven great grandchildren, Cedy, Jackson, Jadyn, Payton, Jack, Olivia, Lauren, Meghan, Dylan, Michaela and Cassidy, one brother, Allen (Mary) Houck of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews and 18 godchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, infant daughter, sister, Joyce Rush and two brothers, James Houck and John Houck.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Joan Dalman will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Michael Klafehn and the Rev. Calvin Kolzow will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Dalman’s memory consider the Trinity Lutheran School, 406 S. Lakeview Ave., Sturgis.
