Maurice Cook, 89

Maurice Cook, age 89, of Mendon, died Tuesday Aug. 16, 2011 at Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers. He was born in Decatur, IL on Aug. 25, 1921 the only child of Stenning and Nellie (Haub) Cook. He was a graduate of Argenta , IL High School, and was married to Henrietta L. Martin on Dec. 24, 1943 in Decatur, IL. They moved to Kalamazoo in 1946 where Maury first worked for J.R. Motors, and later at The Upjohn Company where he retired after 35 years. He has been a resident of Mendon since 1971.

Maury was a member of the Mendon Kiwanis Club where he was responsible for bringing the annual Dust-Off to Mendon. He was a member of the Three Rivers Antique Car Club, the Kalamazoo Auto Restorers Club, and the St. Joseph County Historical Society. He served on the Mendon Village Council and the Planning Commission . He loved music, played the accordion in a dance band in his younger days, and compiled an impressive collection of 78 rpm records. Most recently he authored a series of short stories about his life experiences.

Maury is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Cook of Three Rivers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta in 2004

Cremation has been conducted. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Aug. 27, 2011 at 1 p.m. in the Mendon United Methodist Church with Rev. Ward Pierce and Dr. Lowell Wallswoth officiating. A private entombment of ashes will take place later. Memorials may be directed to the Three Rivers Antique Club, the Mendon Kiwanis Club, or the St. Joseph County Historical Society.
