George W. Washburn, age 63, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at home.
He was born Sept. 30, 1947, in Three Rivers, a son to the late Marion and Hazel “Jo” (Barnes) Washburn.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam. He had been a resident of Sturgis most of his life and had been employed at Casslemans, GM, and most recently as a millwright at American Axle in Three Rivers.
He enjoyed playing pool, golf, and dancing and was on a number of pool and golf leagues in the area.
George enjoyed his family and was a devoted father.
Surviving are daughter, Shelly Jo Washburn of Sturgis; two sisters, Nancy Penoyar of Northport, Fla., and Janet (Roger) Hutchins of Sturgis; a brother, John (Janet) Washburn of Middletown, Ohio; former spouse, Mary Jo (Sutterby) Miller; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Graveside services celebrating the life of George W. Washburn will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 1 at Oak Lawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Bean of Sturgis Wesleyan Church officiating. Full Military Honors will be conferred by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and Capt. John J. Kelley V.F.W. Post #1355.
