Joan L (Dick-Schmitt) Stiteler, age 80, of Mendon, died Friday Oct. 28, 2011, at her home following a long illness.
She was born in Findley, Ohio, on May 29, 1931, the daughter of H. Evert and Mary (Killinger) Dick. The family moved to Mendon in the late 1930s, and it was here that she met and married Clement Schmitt on May 1, 1948. Clem died on July 10, 1983.
Joan had worked for the Kirsch Company in Sturgis for 35 years. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, painting, sewing, ceramics, and crafts, and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Joan was married to Eugene Stiteler on Jan 7, 1989 at St. Edward Catholic Church. He survives along with Joan’s four children, Mary Lou (Cliff) Jepsen, Joseph Schmitt, Kathy (Robert) Spence, and Michael (Brenda Samson) Schmitt all of Mendon; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Faye (Rolland) Bohm of Centreville; sister in law, Joyce (Francis) Woods of Marshall; six step-children , Cheryl (James) Heinritz of Six Lakes, Ron (Judy) Stiteler of Donna, TX, Randall (Carol) Stiteler of Three Rivers, Gary Stiteler of Vicksburg, Joan (Tom) Brady of Three Rivers, and Janice (Buzz) Griffith of Mendon; 11 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Clem Schmitt; and her brother, Clifford Dick.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon, and where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday Nov. 2, 2011, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. James Vinh Le and Monsignor Michael D. Hazard officiating. Burial will follow in St. Edward Cemetery.
