On Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, our Lord Jesus Christ called Margaret Ann Grunert home. Margaret was born on July 29, 1922 to Vere and Vera (Williams) Schug. As a young child, Margaret was raised by her father and step-mother, Emma (LaVoy) Schug (later Zimmerman) in Schoolcraft, MI.
In 1940, Margaret graduated from Schoolcraft High School. Margaret married the love of her life, Arno F. Grunert of Three Rivers, in 1944. They were married on July 29th, the birthday they shared. She was a housewife and stay-at-home mom. For the next 59 years, the couple made their home in Three Rivers and later at Fish Lake – Sturgis.
Margaret was a kind and generous woman who loved her family and friends. She loved swimming, boating, and going shopping with her daughter and granddaughter. They could shop for hours and never buy a thing. She was a fabulous cook. She was an avid bowler and a member of the Three Rivers Tuesday and Thursday Afternoon Ladies Leagues for 30+ years. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Margaret was a loving wife and mother who raised two daughters, Sandra Wood (Sturgis) and Karen Grunert-Wolfinger (Three Rivers). She was a caring grandmother and great-grandmother “Mimi” to Cheyenne Wood, Tamara (Rick) Baird, Xander Wood, Jason Baird, Ethan Baird, Sherri Wood, Jarrod Wood, (all of Three Rivers), Emily Wood (Burr Oak), Christian Baird (Dowagiac) and “adopted grandson” Jason Kershner (Sturgis). Other survivors are her sisters Marilyn Tonander (Kalamazoo), Carole (Merle) Case (Climax & Mission, TX), Vera (Jim) Ginger (Millington, MI), sisters-in-law Ellie Grunert and Betty Grunert (Three Rivers), Irene Imel (Centreville), and brother-in-law Bill (Margaret) Grunert (Florida), as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband in 2003, her father, mother, step-mother, step-father, Art Zimmerman, infant brother, Wesley Schug, brothers-in-law Ron Tonander, Fred W. Grunert, Charles “Al” Grunert, Lyle Holstead, sisters-in-law Lois Grunert, Doris Holstead, and Evelyn Grunert.
The family will receive friends at the Hohner Funeral Home in Three Rivers on Friday, Nov. 11th from 6-8 pm with services on Saturday, Nov. 12th at 11 am. There will be a luncheon immediately following at the Three Rivers Fraternal Order of Eagles Club. Interment will be at Three Rivers Riverside Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to Three Rivers Hospice, the Parkinson’s Foundation, GOCC – Kristy’s Kids Scholarship Fund, and Make-a-Wish Foundation.
