Marcus Carpenter, 90

Marcus Carpenter, age 90, of Sturgis, and formerly of Burr Oak, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, at his home in Sturgis.

Marcus was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Berne, Ind., a son of the late Joseph D. and Fannie (Eicher) Carpenter.

On Sept. 21, 1947, he married Esther L. Eichorn in Burr Oak. She preceded him in death Sept. 30, 2010.

Marcus had lived all of his life in Burr Oak and Sturgis. He retired from Sigrist Furniture Company, where he was a carpet-layer for more than 35 years. He enjoyed working in his garden and yard, and especially enjoyed flowers. He made hundreds of wooden items that he gave as gifts to family and friends or donated to the annual Lake Area School bazaar and auction.

Marcus had attended Locust Grove Mennonite Church for many years. He was a member of the Calvary Chapel in Sturgis.

He is survived by four children, Doyle (Marian) Carpenter of Centreville, Rosetta Carpenter of Sturgis, Delton (Bonnie) Carpenter of Sturgis and Wilma (Merlin) Classen of Bronson; grandchildren Maria and Brian Graber, April and Brad Ruckert, Amanda and Joel Sewell, Brad and Annie Carpenter, Beth Carpenter, Karla and Zachary Reinke, Kurt Classen and fiancee Sarah Alumbaugh, and Kendra and Kerri Classen; great-grandchildren Abigail, Ruth and Abraham Sewell, Adriana, Jesse and Zane Ruckert and Micaiah Carpenter; a step great-grandson, Colin Graber; two brothers, Jim (Faith) Carpenter and Robert (Lois) Neuenschwander; five sisters, Esther (Ralph) Troyer, Bertha (David) Bontrager, Ann (Hezir) Araujo, and Edna and Mary Carpenter; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Carpenter; and a sister-in-law, Vera Carpenter.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Chapel, 66969 N. Centerville Road, Sturgis.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Chapel, with Pastors Harold Carpenter and Dana Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Grove Cemetery in Findley.

If desired, the family suggest memorials in memory of Marcus be made to Calvary Chapel Mission Fund for support of Lynn and Vonda Miller. Envelopes are available at Calvary Chapel or Schipper Funeral Home in Colon.
