Margaret Schemmel, 85

Margaret Schemmel, 85, of Sturgis, passed away early Friday morning, Jan. 6, 2011, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

She was born Feb. 17, 1926, in Bronson, a daughter of the late Alvin and Ada (Halferty) Ernsberger.

Margaret had resided in the Sturgis and Bronson area her entire life, and was a graduate of Bronson High School with the class of 1944

On Dec. 12, 1959, she married Merle Harry Schemmel at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. He died May 2, 1985.

She retired in 1988 from the Kirsch Company in Sturgis following 33 years of dedicated employment.

Margaret was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. She enjoyed reading and watching sporting events, but what made her happiest was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda (John) Hershey of White Pigeon; a son, Michael (Lori) Schemmel of Sturgis; two grandchildren, Sean Schemmel and Amanda Schemmel, both students at Grand Valley University in Grand Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Ruby Porter and Ida Carpenter; and three brothers, Walter Ernsberger, Merland Ernsberger and Arthur Ernsberger.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Margaret Schemmel will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Calvin Kolzow will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Schemmel’s memory consider C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 300 N. Ingalls, Room NI4D06, Ann Arbor, MI 48109.
