A Michigan State Police investigator formerly assigned to the agency’s post in White Pigeon was recognized for his work in a high-profile murder case.
Aaron Steensma was given MSP’s Meritorious Service Award during a ceremony last week in Lansing. The award was issued for Steensma’s work in the case of Colon-area resident Venus Stewart, whose estranged husband, Doug, was sentenced last year to life in prison for the murder of Venus.
The award is the top honor given by the police agency for work on a criminal investigation. Steensma, a 14-year veteran with the agency, was recognized for his dedication to the case and his astute observations as the first responder to Stewart’s parents’ house, where officials believe she was kidnapped by Doug Stewart.
Steensma is now assigned to the post in Coldwater.
