Colon Will Increase Water Bills

Residential and commercial water bills in the village of Colon will soon feature a newly added monthly service fee of almost a dollar.

Starting in March, the 89-cent-per-month fee will be added to the 630 water customers within the village limits to help generate $6,000 toward a new fire/rescue agreement between the village and township.

Colon Township was paying all of more than $13,000 for hydrant rentals for Colon Township Fire and Rescue, but township officials decided late last year to cap the amount at $7,000.

Township officials left the balance for the village to pay, which has resulted in the monthly surcharge. The village also plans to adjust monthly water rates to take into account cost-of-living expenses. That increase is expected to be set within the next two months.
