Clifford Vincent Samuels, age 89, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2012, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
He was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Lady Smith, Wis., a son of the late Arthur and Irene (Porth) Samuels.
Mr. Samuels resided in Sturgis since 1946 coming from South Bend, Ind.
On Nov. 2, 1946, he married Dorothy M. Prestidge at the First Baptist Church in Sturgis.
He retired from Paramount Furniture Company in Sturgis following 19 years of dedicated employment. Before joining Paramount he had been employed for 42 years by Sturgis Newport Business Forms until the business closed and he had also worked for Lane Northern Well Drilling in South Bend, Ind.
Mr. Samuels was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 3rd Battalion 395th Infantry 99th Division from Dec. 4, 1942-Dec. 27, 1945, earning the rank of Private First Class. During his service in the U.S. Army he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Badge and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a member of Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion, Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW, Eagles Lodge #1314, Loyal Order of Moose #574 and enjoyed bowling, camping and meeting new friends.
Mr. Samuels is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 65 years, Dorothy; three sons, Larry (Sue) Samuels of Edwardsburg, Byron (Pamela) Samuels of White Pigeon and Rex Samuels of Sturgis; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandsons; two sisters, Patricia Deitsch of Osceola, Ind., and Wilma Dunning of Mishawaka, Ind.; two brothers, Buren Samuels of Jacksonville, N.C., and Aubrey Samuels of Nebo, N.C., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and five sisters.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Clifford V. Samuels will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Calvin Kolzow of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis will officiate. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. In accordance with his wishes cremation will follow the service.
