Courtney Christiansen, 96

Courtney V. Christiansen, 96, of Three Rivers, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at his home. He was born in Rapid River on May 3, 1915, the son of Rudolph and Frances (Johnson) Christiansen, and was a graduate of Rapid River High School. He operated a welding and machine shop in Escanaba before his marriage to Violet E. Hegman on Aug. 24, 1940. During WWII they both worked at Saginaw Steering Gear manufacturing weapons for the war effort. Courtney was a 35-year employee of Clifton Engineering where he began as a linesman, was later foreman, and retired as a project manager. He was a self-taught woodworker and carpenter, and enjoyed hunting and reading.

Courtney is survived by two children and their spouses, Ned (Marie Eugenia) Christiansen of Three Rivers and Mary Frances (Martin) Harkins of Houghton; three grandchildren, Matthew (Erin) Harkins, Kate (Michael) Harkins-Hogberg and Valo Christiansen; three great-grandchildren, Henry Harkins, Emmett Hogberg and Elena Harkins. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Randolph, Harlon and Vern Christiansen; a son, Courtney James Christiansen and his wife, Violet.

Cremation has been conducted. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9 at the Eickhoff Farrand Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers with Rev. Sam Maddox officiating. A private interment of his ashes will take place later. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
