Donald R. McClish, age 87, of Centreville, died Tuesday March 13, 2012 at his home following a long illness. He was born in Nottawa Township on Nov. 22, 1924 the son of Lawrence and Mildred (White) McClish. He attended Portage Schools before serving with the U.S. Army Tank Corps in the Philippines and Japan. He was married to Barbara Meacham on Jan. 4, 1948 in Vicksburg. They owned and operated McClish’s I.G.A. grocery store in Portage for many years, retiring in 1989. Donald was a member of the V.F.W. and the Farm Bureau.
He is survived by 4 daughters and their spouses, Sandra Hall-Tiffany (Douglas) of Lowell, Patricia Reed (Greg) of Centreville, Susan Schmidtendorff (Kevin) of Three Rivers, and Donna Grubbs (Denny) of Three Rivers; 8 grandchildren, Robert and Keith Hall, Samantha Grubbs, Hillary and Colin Reed, Adam, Alex, and Alicia Schmidtendorff; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Maurice McClish (Margaret) of Portage. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marlin McClish; and his wife, Barbara in 2006.
Cremation has been conducted. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday March 25, 2012 at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon with Rev. Gary Carr officiating. Military interment of ashes will be in Mendon Cemetery by Hice-Shutes American Legion Post #170. Memorials may be directed to either the Three Rivers Carnegie Center Council for the Arts, or to the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging.
