More Copper Wiring Stolen

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department was called over the weekend to Sherman Township, where a farmer reported the theft of copper wire from an irrigation system.

The incident took place late Friday or early Saturday at a location on Grim Road, near Schrader Road.

Stolen from two towers was about 165 feet of copper wiring, wrapped in black casing.

Investigators said the situation was the second reported in Sherman Township in less than a week, as almost 1,000 feet of wire was reported stolen from six irrigation pivots along Balk Road between Feb. 1 and last week.

Police suspect the parties responsible for the thefts are selling it for scrap, where dealers are paying a premium for copper.
