Agnes Wenning, 92

Agnes M. Wenning, 92, of Sturgis, passed away early Thursday morning, April 12, 2012, at the home of her granddaughter in Paw Paw.

She was born July 5, 1919, in Kalamazoo, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Vyverman) Westrick.

Mrs. Wenning had resided in Sturgis since 1986, coming from Kalamazoo.

On May 14, 1949, she married Garrett Wenning at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kalamazoo.

She attended Parsons Business School in Kalamazoo and had been employed in the office at Consumers Power and Atlas Press, both in Kalamazoo, and she was a dedicated homemaker, wife and mother.

For many years, she was a volunteer at Kalamazoo State Hospital. Mrs. Wenning was a dedicated active member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, where she served on the Altar Society. She was the first lay woman in the state of Michigan to be appointed as Eucharistic Minister. Praying the Rosary was a very important part of the Wennings’ life and they truly believed that the family that prays together, stays together.

She is survived by two daughters, Edith Bott of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Mary Ann (Larry) Carpenter of Sturgis; a son, Joseph Wenning of Batesburg, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, Robert, Amanda, Jennifer, Michael, Garrett, Heather, Traci, Tammy, Brooke and Eric; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Katherine Losiewski of Alaska; and many godchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Mary Redmond; and five brothers, Jude, Joseph, Herbert, Edward and William Westrick.

The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, where the Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

A funeral Mass celebrating the life of Agnes M. Wenning will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Angels Catholic Church 402 S. Nottawa Sturgis in Sturgis. The Rev. Father Mark Vyverman of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Three Rivers will officiate.

A graveside committal and burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kalamazoo.
