Amos D. Hochstetler, age 86, of Findley Road, Sturgis, died Wednesday April 11, 2012, at the home of his daughter, Ella Mae (Freeman) Bontrager.
He was born March 28, 1926, in St. Joseph County, a son of the late Dan M. and Anna S. (Wickey) Hochstetler.
On Dec. 18, 1947, Amos married Ida D. Bontrager in Centreville. They lived in holy matrimony for 56 years, 11 months and nine days. He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. He was a very kind and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Amos is survived by seven sons, Ora Jay (Barbara) Hochstetler, Melvin A. (Orpha) Hochstetler, Vernon A. (Katie Mae) Hochstetler all of Centreville, Elva Ray (Neoma) Hochstetler of Sturgis, Tobie A. (Leah) Hochstetler of Mendon, Amos A. Jr. (Delilah Mae) Hochstetler of Centreville, and Owen A. (Irma) Hochstetler of Colon; one daughter, Ella Mae (Freeman) Bontrager of Sturgis; 59 grandchildren; 115 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ervin D. (Polly) Hochstetler of LaGrange, Ind., Danny Jr. (Edna) Hochstetler of Shipshewana, Ind., John L. (Katie) Hochstetler of LaGrange, Ind.; three sisters, Barbara (Mose, deceased) Yoder of Nottawa, Mary (Ora, deceased) Miller of LaGrange, Ind., and Edna (Merle) Christner of Shipshewana, Ind.; one sister-in-law, Susie (Henry, deceased) Miller of Centreville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; an infant son; an infant grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-8 p.m. today and all day on Friday at his son Melvin Hochstetler’s home, 25938 Truckenmiller Road, Centreville.
Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Melvin Hochstetler residence, with Home Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Order Amish Cemetery in Centreville.
