Liberty Bell Award to Sylvester

The St. Joseph County Bar Association has bestowed its annual Liberty Bell Award to Eva Sylvester.

The Three Rivers resident has a 45-year history serving as a legal secretary. She has spent 22 of those years working in St. Joseph County Probate Court under Judge Thomas Shumaker.

District Court Judge Jeff Middleton announced Sylvester as the recipient of the 28th annual award Monday. The Liberty Bell Award recognizes a non-lawyer, individual or organization with in St. Joseph County who has made a contribution to the community in one of several ways.

Middleton said those areas include promoting a better understanding of the nation’s Constitution and Bill of Rights, engineering greater respect for the law and court system, and fostering a better understanding and appreciation for the rule of the law.

A public ceremony to honor Sylvester is slated to take place at 9 a.m. May 1 in Judge Shumaker’s Courtroom B.
