Lots of candidates running in August

The filing deadline for county offices was Tuesday, and voters in St. Joseph County in August will have choices to make in at least three contests.

Five candidates are vying for the post of probate judge, a position currently held by the retiring Tom Shumaker. The contestants are John Barnes, Tom Robertson, David Tomlinson, Christine Yancey and Robert Dutka.

Three people are vying to replace circuit court judge William Welty, who is also retiring. They are Rob Pattison, Matt Davidson and Andrew Rogness.

In the race for drain commissioner, incumbent Jeff Wenzel is being challenged by the person he defeated four years ago, David Hassenger.

County Commission Chairman Rick Shaffer is being challenged by Barry Miller for the District 3 seat. Meanwhile, incumbents Jerry Ware and John Dobberteen will square off for what will be the new-look District 5.

Races for sheriff, prosecutor, county clerk, treasurer and surveyor are uncontested.
