TR Fire upgrade to Class 4

Three Rivers Fire Department Chief Dan Tomlinson said the department received word that its rating from the Insurance Services Office will be upgraded to a Class 4.

Addressing members of the city commission earlier this week, Tomlinson said the one-step improvement means the fire-department insurance auditor noted the comprehensiveness of the department warranted the Class 4 designation.

The upside for residents, Tomlinson said, is a potential reduction in their home insurance rates. Tomlinson noted he is monitoring whether insurance rates might also be decreased for businesses.

He said many insurance companies factor in a municipality’s fire department ISO rating to determine insurance rates. Tomlinson said one resident who has already brought the better ISO rating to his insurance company’s attention was told he will save at least $125 a year in his insurance premium.

The improved ISO rating will go into effect in August.
