Deputy to patrol Cade Lake Park

A part-time deputy from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department will patrol Cade Lake Park over the course of five days next month.

The decision comes after members of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved Parks and Recreation Department Director John Pence to use money from the Cade Lake fund to cover expenses related to patrol. Pence said he will seek eight hours of coverage the Saturdays and Sundays before and after the Fourth of July, and on the holiday itself.

He expects the measure to cost about $1,200 for the 40 hours of coverage.

The deputy will assist campground staff with violations related primarily to parking, alcohol, fireworks and disorderly conduct.

Pence and members of the county’s Parks and Recreation Commission had hoped to secure funding from the county to cover patrol at Nottawa Park as well, but county commission members did not offer the allocation.
